Birthday Party Project Brings Kids Joy One Party At A Time

The topic of this article is bring kids joy. The title of this article is “Birthday Party Project Brings Kids Joy One Party At A Time.” This article comes from dogonews.com.

Paige Chenault and her Birthday Party Project (BPP) has been bring joy to thousands of children both in the U.S.A and worldwide who live in homeless shelters or transitional facilities never get to experience the joy of celebrating the day they were born.Over the past three years, Chenault and her team of “birthday enthusiasts” have hosted over 1,350 parties for 12,000 kids between the ages of one to eighteen. And things are only accelerating. This year, BPP has planned over 180 parties across the country, from San Francisco to Minneapolis to New York.

There isn’t really an issue in this article other than there are kids everywhere who are homeless and don’t know their birthdays which is very sad and a big issue! I like that there are people like Paige Chenault who are actually doing something productive. This makes me feel very happy and brings me lots of joy. This affects me greatly because now I know that kids are being able to celebrate their birthday even if it’s not their technical birthday but it still makes them feel happy and loved. I really enjoyed reading about this.

This article impacts the world greatly because there are less and less homeless children who don’t ever get the chance to celebrate their birthday because of the terrible situation they are in. So by people actually doing something productive and helping these kids celebrate their birthday and being a light in their young life impacts the world so much. The world needs more people doing productive things for others like the people in this article which is why this article impacts the world so much. This also shows there are people out there being a light to someone who really needs it in this broken world.

China Ends One-Child Policy, Allowing Families Two Children

The topic of this article is change in China. The title of the article is “China Ends One-Child Policy, Allowing Families Two Children,” and it’s  from New York TImes.

In China the Communist Party leadership ended its decades-old “one child” policy on Thursday, announcing that all married couples would be allowed to have two children because aging population could jeopardize China’s economic ascent. The issue in this article is that this may still would not help China’s economy get better, but my positions on the issue is for the change because i believe that it will help in the long run. I feel this will make couples not be afraid as much of having another child which will make marriages grown. This makes me extremely happy that they are now able to have more than one child because no one should be limited to the number of children they can have. Life is a very important thing for our world. This doesn’t really affect me really because I don’t live in China but i still think the Communist party changing this policy is a great thing.

This affects the world greatly because it means more people in China can enjoy having two children to raise. This will also increase the relationship between marriages to become strong and will have the only child to have a better childhood rather than not having a sibling  to enjoy memory, birthdays, and special moments with. This will help China’s economy grow in the years to come. This will show China that they should’ve never had the policy of just letting couples have one child. Overall, this will impact the world in so many ways  that it’s hard to mention them all.

How Tiny Mealworms May Help Reduce Our Massive Plastic Pollution Problem

The  topic of this article is about helping the environment. The title of this is call “How Tiny Mealworms May Help Reduce Our Massive Plastic Pollution Problem.” This article is from http://www.dogonews.com.

This article is about a couple scientist who have found unlikely natural solution to get  rid of the world of this dangerous plastic. Scientist discovered that mealworms turns out that tiny larval forms of the darkling beetle, is the what will help them get rid of plastic. This surprising revelation was made by a team of researchers from California’s Stanford University and China’s Beihang University. In the study that was published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology on September 30th, the scientists exposed 100 mealworms to Styrofoam.

The issue with this article is that people will think by the mealworms eating the plastic, and Styrofoam will not be good for the mealworms health. My feelings toward this event is positive because they have discovered a great way to get rid of the plastic that is harming our world. I don’t feel that the mealworm will be harmed through this because they have done a lot of experiments on where it’s okay for the mealworms health. They are even trying to produce an enzyme that will help the mealworms health to digest the plastic. This affects me greatly because it will help my planet’s environment.

This event impacts the world extremely. It extremely impacts the world because this is a way to help the environment become healthier and better for our water and soil. If our soil is harmed by the plastic and Styrofoam it made the crops we grow not healthy for us to eat. This will make us humans eating food that is not good for us and will harm us. This is why this event impacts the world because it’s a solution to the world’s plastic waste problem. If we want our world to continue to thrive we need to take care of it and by doing this new discovery it will help the world become a better place.

Photojournalism Vocabulary

Pixels- a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Image resolution– a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Megabyte- a minute area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed

Megapixel – a unit of graphic resolution equivalent to one million or (strictly) 1,048,576 (220) pixels.

Gigabyte- a unit of information equal to one billion (109) or, strictly, 230 bytes.

jpeg- a format for compressing image files.

raw-  a file that contains minimally processed data from theimage sensor of either a digital camera, image scanner, or motion picture film scanner.

tiff- The ability to store image data in a lossless format makes a TIFF file a useful image archive, because, unlike standard JPEG files, a TIFF file using lossless compression (or none) may be edited and re-saved without losing image quality. This is not the case when using the TIFF as a container holding compressed JPEG.

PNG- (pronounced ping as in ping-pong; for Portable Network Graphics) is a file format for image compression that, in time, is expected to replace the Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) that is widely used on today’s Internet.

Histogram- is a graphical representation of the distribution of numerical data. It is an estimate of the probability distribution of a continuous variable.

Aperturea hole or an opening through which light travels.

Shutter speed- the length of time when the film or digital sensor inside the camera is exposed to light, also when a camera’s shutter is open when taking a photograph. The amount of light that reaches the film or image sensor is proportional to the exposure time.

Depth of field– the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph.

Noise– The occurrence of color dots or specks where there should be none.

Lag time Refers to latency, or lag measured by the difference between the time there is a signal input, and the time it takes the input to display on the screen.

Hot shoe- A mounting point on the top of a camera to attach a flash unit and other compatible accessories.

Fisheye- A lens of small focal length, having a highly curved protruding front element, that covers an angle of view of almost 180°.

Aperture priority- a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific aperture value while the camera selects a shutter speed to match, thereby ensuring proper exposure

Shutter priority- a setting on some cameras that allows the user to choose a specific shutter speed while the camera adjusts the aperture to ensure correct exposure.

Bitmap- mapping from some domain (for example, a range of integers) to bits, that is, values which are zero or one. It is also called a bit array or bitmap index.

White balance- the process of removing unrealistic color casts, so that objects which appear white in person are rendered white in your photo.

Exposure-the act of exposing, laying open, or uncovering:

Watermarking- a kind of marker covertly embedded in a noise-tolerant signal such as an audio, video or image data. It is typically used to identify ownership of the copyright of such signal.

Optical Zoom- allows you to zoom in (or out) on the subject in the LCD or viewfinder. This will enable you to get a closer view of the subject before taking your picture.

Macro ~ a lens suitable for taking photographs unusually close to the subject.

Telephoto ~ a lens with a longer focal length than standard, giving a narrow field of view and a magnified image.

Wide Angle ~ (of a lens) having a short focal length and hence a field covering a wide angle.

DSLR ~ A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called a digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera combining the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.

Digital zoom: is a function of a digital camera used to make the image seem more close-up.Digital Zoom on a digital camera works the same as cropping and enlarging a photo in a graphics program.

bracketing: place (one or more people or things) in the same category or group.

light meter:an instrument for measuring the intensity of light, used chiefly to show the correct exposure when taking a photograph.

Image stabilization: (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera or other imaging device during exposure.

Dynamic range-,is the difference between the smallest and largest usable signal through a transmission or processing chain or storage medium. It is measured as a ratio, or as a base-10 (decibel) or base-2 (doublings, bits or stops) logarithmic value.

Exposure compensation- Exposure compensation is a technique for adjusting the exposure indicated by a photographic exposure meter, in consideration of factors that may cause the indicated exposure to result in a less-than-optimal image1.

Japan’s 105-Year-Old “Golden Bot” Is The World’s Oldest Competitive Sprinter

The topic of my article is about a recording  105 year-old men that likes to sprint competitively. The title of the article is Japan’s 105-Year-Old “Golden Bot” Is The World’s Oldest Competitive Sprinter. I got this article from www. Dogo News.

105 year old Hidekichi Hidekichi from Japan on Sep. 23, 2015 ran a record-breaking 100-meter sprint. He isn’t like normal older senior citizens. He ran the race the day after his birthday

This article doesn’t really have an issue.

I feel really happy about this event because even though Hidekichi Hidekichi is old he still is living a good life. This event affects me because rut encourages me to be like him when I get older. I would to be on the shape he is in when I get older. It would be really good for my health as well.

It’s impact on the world would be by encouraging people to be more active by them seeing such an elderly man being as active as he is. Also, it will encourage them to want to live a healthier lifestyle. If people were to start to exercise the way this man does, then as Americans start to get more fit many disease and health issues due to weight will start to diminish. The overall impact of this story will motivate people to live healthier, be more active, and give the encouragement needed for some to start exercising.

These kids were geniuses — they were just too poor for anyone to discover them

The topic of the article is about kids that are gifted but get overlooked because they are poor or because they are a minority. The title is “These Kids were geniuses-they were just too poor for anyone to discover them. This article is from The Washington Post.

Poor Gifted kids in Broward County, Fla.  get over looked  to be sent in to the gifted program because they aren’t tested due to their status and not having the means of affording it(being poor). Schools in Broward recently started testing kids in the second grade to be able to find gifted kids instead of testing them later on when they are likely to not show that they are gifted due to predicaments.  The results were very impressive and sad because it showed the schools that they were leaving behind gifted kids

I agree that no kid should be overlooked because of their status. I feel disgusted by knowing that kids get left behind due to their status of being poor. This event affects me because now I know that there are so many gifted kids being left behind and they can’t do anything about it. Other than that this doesn’t affect much but it’s still very upsetting kids get left behind. Nobody should be overlooked by anyone especially by  schools that don’t want to spend the money to test all their kids to be sent in to the gifted program.

This impacts the world tremendously because these means so many kids not only in Broward aren’t being put in gifted programs but all over the world because of their status.  This makes the world loose on so many kids that would have contributed to the world in a productive way. Instead the world has less kids that would have been successful in their careers. In addition, now that schools have started testing the kids that are poor they have see a bigger number of kids in the gifted programs. This impacts the world because they have gain some of the kids they have lost by overlooking them but that doesn’t make up for the ones they didn’t see because of they were poor.
